Kajans is an incorporated registered charity, run by a Board of Trustees.   The organisation has no major assets except for a 25 year lease on Albert Hall.  Kajans was established as a registered charity in 1996 (Charity registration number 1112495) and became a limited company by guarantee in 2004 (number 05116738).

The charity’s objectives are:
To promote for the benefit of the inhabitants of the West Midlands, with a focus on North Birmingham and the surrounding areas (hereinafter called “the area of benefit”) without distinction of sex or of political, religious or other opinions by associating the local authorities, voluntary organisations and inhabitants in a common effort to advance education and the arts and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure-time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants.
